The museum’s mission is to provide unique educational experiences that promote a deeper understanding of the historical importance of American aviation in World War II and its role in shaping the world we live in today. The focal point is the collection of 29 aircraft. Flown on demonstration days, they allow visitors to see them come to life and take to the skies. In addition, the museum has served over 28,000 students in its K-12 Education STEM and Social Studies Programs since their inception.
With five military bases and rich aviation history, the museum proudly calls Colorado Springs home and documents aviation’s role in America’s rise as a global power. Through its aircraft, exhibits, and programs, the museum tells stories of our nation’s tremendous wartime technological advancements and describes how social and economic changes were essential to the war effort to inspire future leaders and innovators.
Designated by Congress as “America’s National World War II Aviation Museum,” the museum broke ground on a $9 million expansion in August 2025. The museum will expand its collection of 29 aircraft, exhibits, and programs, offering visitors more than 200,000 square feet of experiences and memories.
Since 2022, the museum has consistently ranked in TripAdvisor’s Top 25 Attractions in the US, the “Best of the Best” Attractions. This year, the Museum is rated #8!
“I liked learning all about the planes and what people were doing at home to help during the war because it taught me they didn't have most of the things we take for granted today.” — Middle school student who participated in the museum's education program
