The Pikes Peak Bulletin has been serving Manitou Springs, in several iterations, since 1918. The newly-revived Bulletin was established in April 2023 as a nonprofit community newspaper – a growing trend as small, local papers seek to stay in circulation. Our coverage was expanded to include Old Colorado City, Manitou Springs, Downtown Colorado Springs and the Lower Ute Pass. It is our mission to create a sustainable, community-powered, local news source on issues that impact our coverage area.
In the past 20 years, 52+ local newspapers have shuttered. Almost half of those closed in the past 5 years. It’s vitally important to support nonprofit community newspapers. They are trusted news sources, encourage community engagement and are good for democracy. We provide factual, objective reporting while telling our readers’ stories. They can rely upon us to observe journalistic integrity and keep them informed.
Short-term goals include: complete our strategic plan and expand our 2 programs (Healthy Spaces, Safer Places and All Our Neighbors). Our number one goal is to position the newspaper with a solid foundation of a strategic funding mix and a crack team of journalism/newspaper professionals.
In its first year as a nonprofit community newspaper, 40% of the Pikes Peak Bulletin’s revenue came from private donations from our supporters.
“The Bulletin is working to deliver the light of community. In an age when local newspapers are disappearing at a rapid pace, the Bulletin has re-invented itself and is proving that it is possible to sell good news.” — Dan Stuart
