Rocky Mountain Field Institute

What

Rocky Mountain Field Institute conserves and protects public lands in Southern Colorado through volunteer-based trail and restoration projects, environmental education, and restoration research. Last year, RMFI contributed over 29,000 on-the-ground work hours towards maintaining public lands at 23 locations. RMFI protects and enhances our land and water resources by completing projects focused on watershed restoration, forest health, and creating sustainable recreation opportunities.

Why

Southern Colorado is a beautiful place to live, and everyone deserves the opportunity to experience that beauty. By engaging community volunteers and employing professional trail crews to accomplish on-the-ground work, RMFI helps people experience the stunning landscapes of Southern Colorado while filling critical gaps in public lands maintenance and stewardship.

Goals

RMFI has been stewarding landscapes like Garden of the Gods, Palmer Park, and Gray Back Peak for over 22 years. We aim to continue preserving these treasured landscapes for years to come by reinvigorating and expanding our education program to instill an ethic of care in the next generation of land stewards.

Did You Know

Over the last three years, 24% of RMFI’s volunteers have been under the age of 17. Hundreds of Southern Colorado youth engage in public land stewardship projects with RMFI each year!

“What was your favorite part about volunteering with RMFI? Watching people from different backgrounds come together to improve the open space. Getting outdoors in a favorite area and restoring the native habitat.” — Gary C - RMFI Volunteer Crew Leader
