Our all-volunteer group protects and preserves Monument Valley Park in order to continue General Palmer’s vision of a green space in the center of the city that we can all enjoy. We repair the park’s features including historic stone entryways, walls, overlooks and bridges, as well as care for the park’s vegetation. We organize free music concerts, guided bird outings, wildflower walks, tree walks, and park cleanups, which provide beneficial and educational activities for our community.
Monument Valley Park is a downtown oasis that our community uses every day to run, bike, walk, and play. It is key to the quality of life for many city residents. Its historic features and stonework create a unique experience. City funding is insufficient to maintain the park. Without our group’s efforts, preservation of many park amenities would not have happened, and the century-old stonework would be lost forever.
We hope to raise funds to go toward the repair of the park’s unique features. Our goals include the repair of the historic stone entry arch along Bijou Street, the park’s stone baseball stadium and its concrete bleachers, and the stone embankment wall behind Duck Pond.
Our Friends group gifted $100,000 in 2024 to the Colorado Springs Parks Dept. to pay for the installation of stonework around the perimeter of Duck Pond. The funds were raised in past Give! Campaigns.
“FMVP is amazing, staying steadfast in their efforts to improve one of our loveliest parks!” — Susan Davies, Executive Director of Trails and Open Space Coalition
