Our volunteer group is committed to safeguarding and preserving Monument Valley Park, ensuring that Gen. Palmer’s vision of a green space in the city’s center remains a reality. We repair the park’s historic, man-made structures including stone entries, walls, overlooks and bridges, while also caring for the natural landscape. We host free music concerts, guided walks featuring birds, plants, and trees, and organize park cleanups to encourage community involvement in our cherished historic park.
Monument Valley Park is a downtown oasis that our community uses every day to walk, bike, and play. It enhances the quality of life for many city residents. Its historic features and stonework offer a unique experience. Yet city funding falls far short, putting the park at risk. Without our group’s efforts, preservation of the park’s amenities would be deficient, and its century-old stonework would be lost forever.
We hope to raise funds to go toward the repair of the park’s unique features. Our next goals are the repair of the park’s stone baseball stadium including its concrete bleachers and the stone entry arch along Bijou Street.
The Colorado Springs Parks Department faces an estimated $270 million capital improvements project backlog throughout our parks system after years of insufficient funding.
“The Friends of Monument Valley Park are dedicated and well organized. They continue to be vital partners in caring for and improving Monument Valley Park, which is one of our most historic and well-loved city parks.” — Britt Haley, Director of Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Dept.
